The Importance of Data-Based Decision Making in Continuous Improvement/MTSS

The use of data-based decision making is critical for the Continuous Improvement/MTSS (CI/MTSS) process in school districts. By systematically collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, districts can make informed decisions that enhance student outcomes and overall school performance. Data provides objective evidence that can inform decisions about curriculum, instruction, resource allocation, and other critical areas. It also ensures that decisions are based on facts rather than assumptions or anecdotal evidence. Continuous data review ensures that improvement efforts are ongoing rather than episodic and it fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the district.

In May, a Data Review Workshop was held to provide CI/MTSS teams an opportunity to delve deeply into their district data. This workshop was a crucial step in supporting data-based decision making and continuous improvement/MTSS processes. Eight districts attended for a day of data analysis. The workshop aimed to identify both strengths and areas of need within the districts, supporting data-based decision-making and problem-solving processes. Teams were introduced to a data analysis template that was used to guide them in the analysis of various forms of data, including demographic, perceptual, achievement, social-emotional behavioral, and program data. Staff from the ESU 10 Teaching & Learning and Special Education Departments were in attendance to offer consultation and support to teams. Teams identified areas of strengths and areas of need within the district and left with priorities to focus on for this upcoming year that are tied to their continuous improvement/MTSS goals and action plans.

The Data Review workshop demonstrated the critical role of data-based decision making in the Continuous Improvement/MTSS process. By equipping CIP/MTSS teams with the skills and knowledge to effectively analyze and utilize data, the workshop has laid the foundation for ongoing improvement within the districts. Moving forward, the commitment to regular data review and informed decision making will be essential in achieving sustained progress and enhancing student outcomes.
