K-5 Building a Strong Mathematical Foundation

Number sense and mathematics mindsets are two foundational components of math-rich environments.  We will develop strategies to effectively and efficiently building number sense, with a special focus on fact fluency and math talk.  The day will also include research-based evidence of the role of mindsets and ways to incorporate growth mindset into the math class.

Goals:
Teachers will create a working definition of number sense, including what it could look and sound like in their classrooms.
Teachers will plan ways to meaningfully incorporate number sense routines, math talk, and number talks into their classrooms.
Teachers will determine how students best learn (and remember) basic facts, including a variety of strategies and games.
Teachers will explore how to change teaching practices and school culture in ways that support students in embracing growth mindset beliefs and behaviors.
