STEM Student Activities @ ESU 10 New Teacher Academy

On March 15, 2022 we had over 500 competing students from 25 Nebraska schools attend the ESU 10 Regional Science Olympiad competition held at the University of Nebraska, Kearney. Students competed in active, hands-on group events that range from Storm the Castle to Ping Pong Para-chute to Chem Lab – all of which tests the students’ science knowledge and engineering skills. We want to develop students critical thinking, problem solving and ability to collabo-rate in an environment similar to what it would be like in the real world.

Participating schools from Middle School and Senior High levels include Arcadia, Axtell, Brady, Cambridge, Central Valley, Centura, Elm Creek, Gibbon, Grand Island Northwest, Gothenburg, Harvard, Hayes Center, Hemmingford, Lincoln Science Focus, Loup City, Ogallala, Ord, Parkview Christian, Paxton, Ravenna, Riverside, SEM, South Platte, St. Paul, and York.

New Teacher Academy If you want to learn more about the ESU 10 Regional Science Olympiad check out our website. You can also see the 2022 ESU 10 Science Olympiad photo gallery at: https://esu10.org/2022-science-olympiad. With the support of ESU 10 staff, teachers, State Science Olympiad Director, and the University of Nebraska-Kearney we were able to make this an educational and fun day for our students!

New Teacher Academy Educational Service Unit 10 welcomed 57 students from 6 districts on April 27th, 2022 for STEMfest. STEMfest is a culminating event to share the process and products or prototype student groups used to design a solution to an authentic problem in their school or community. STEMfest is a project based de-sign thinking challenge where students are given choice in what and how to pro-duce products (tangible product, digital work, or an experience) to develop solutions to authentic problems.

We invited people from local businesses and organizations to be part of our event as judges. The judges got to observe the presentations, observe proto-types, ask questions and then during deliberation give feedback. During judges deliberations Nate McClenahan, Jon Haussler, Dallas Lewandoski, and Theresa Rita-Olsen led a student activity, Duct Tape Boat Challenges and STEMfest Quiz Bowl for the students.

New Teacher Academy This year Sargent, Broken Bow, Meadowlark in Kearney, Gibbon, Ravenna, and Cozad brought completed projects. We divided the students and judges into 3 groups, The Makers, The Innovators, and The Visionaries. Sarah Essay, Jason Everett, and I are excited to continue to grow STEMfest and support students in solv-ing authentic problems in their school or community!

The winning projects…
