Instruction


ESU Teaching & Learning Coordinators offer facilitation of supports designed to deepen implementation of research based instructional strategies and classroom practices. Implementation support may include instructional model training, consultation, instructional rounds or learning walks, classroom observation and coaching, and professional goal setting assistance, etc.

Training on foundational pedagogical practices and strategies which can be implemented across content areas may include student engagement, comprehension, classroom management, relationships, etc.

A.P.L. Instructional Strategies


The Teaching and Learning staff offer training and support for instructional skills and strategies called A.P.L. in order to help educators become proficient in classroom management. Using A.P.L. can elicit the following outcomes:

  • Increased student time on task.
  • Improved student behavior.
  • Improved student performance.
  • Insights into and options for classroom organization.
  • Motivation of students.
  • Classroom management techniques that work.

A.P.L. training includes the topics of instructional objectives, anticipatory set, closure, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, success ladder, covert and overt active participation, managing student behavior, action plan, management strategies, maximum concept, classroom conditions, teaching episode, feeling tone, level of concern, reinforcers, interest, practice, time and quantity, knowledge of results, and modeling.

Academic Literacy Project (ALP)


ESU 10 is pleased to offer the Academic Literacy Project, a professional development series that focuses on helping teachers become familiar with and implement research-based literacy strategies that will increase student achievement for adolescent learners.The project focuses on four research-based recommendations for improving adolescent literacy. The recommendations are to:

  1. Provide explicit vocabulary instruction
  2. Provide direct and explicit comprehension strategy instruction
  3. Provide opportunities for extended discussion of text meaning and interpretation
  4. Increase student motivation and engagement in literacy learning

ESU 10 believes that blended learning is a combination of differentiation, formative assessment, direct and guided instruction, digital resources, engagement, classroom management and the 4 C’s of 21st century learning. All of these components ultimately enhance your school’s instructional model.

Distance Education


Using high-speed networks, the ESU and school districts sent and received classes, workshops, and meetings to add to local curriculum offerings and to increase educational opportunities for student and adult members of the community in a real-time, two-way, interactive audio and video environment. Many courses were dual-credit offerings as well as supplemental opportunities provided in the form of virtual field trips or career connections. Member districts received assistance in classroom design, equipment selection and purchase, and instructor training. Funding came from annual fees assessed to member districts, training fees, RUS (Rural Utilities Service) grant, and other non-grant funds.

eBooks


ESU 10 is excited to inform you about our most recent purchase of OverDrive K-12 eBook Library. We have joined a statewide collection for eBooks which now provides thousands of titles of eBooks and Audiobooks for all grade levels. This access to the Nebraska Schools Shared Digital Collection is being provide free of charge as part of our service to all school as required by state statue.

The only requirement to use the collection is to also use the statewide federation of Identity Management system often referred to as Single-Sign On. Most school have already setup this SSO which enables one account to access multiple services with simplified account management within one directory within the school.

Student access to this library is best experienced using the website https://soraapp.com or the Sora App on mobile devices.


OverDrive SDL Advantage

Custom collections for your school within the shared district collection website. OverDrive SDL Advantage is a program that enables members of SDL shared collections to add a custom collection exclusively for their students. These individual schools, upon enrolling in OverDrive SDL Advantage, may purchase digital titles in formats that their shared collection supports (e.g., audiobooks, eBooks, music and/or video) and make them available to their students within their shared collection’s OverDrive-powered “virtual locker” website.

Benefits
SDL Advantage member schools may reduce waiting lists by purchasing additional copies of popular titles and making them available only to their students. SDL Advantage members may also create custom collections by purchasing titles that are not in the shared district collection but are of interest to their students. The SDL Advantage member library’s titles will appear on the same OverDrive-powered website their students have always used, eliminating the need for additional URLs and links.

SDL Advantage Titles and Materials
All material purchased by participating SDL Advantage school are for the exclusive use of the SDL Advantage school students. SDL Advantage materials will not be visible to other district school members. SDL Advantage school students will be asked to sign into their accounts in order to see the additional titles and to check out Advantage material.

High Ability Learner


Description

In recognition that all children have special needs, ESU 10 offers High Ability Learner consultation to help create awareness and to develop teaching strategies that enable high ability learners to reach their potential.

Program Goals

  • To promote and provide information and resources to parents, educators, and the community about specific needs and educational experiences necessary and appropriate for the high ability learner.
  • To promote continuous improvement of quality education for all children by development of differentiated curriculum.
  • To promote experiences and opportunities for the high ability student.
  • To assist local school districts in complying with Rule 3 guidelines and procedures.

Services Offered

Services related to the high ability learner are available, upon request, to ESU10 school districts.

  • MATERIALS - Materials related to high ability learners are available for checkout through the ESU10 media library.
  • CONSULTATION - Consultative services are available, upon request, to local school boards, committees, administrators, or teachers on issues related to high ability learners and/or needs of high ability students.
  • IN-SERVICE/WORKSHOPS - Either awareness or strategy training is available to requesting schools. Some workshop topic would be particularly suitable for districts who are in the beginning stages of implementing a program. Other topics are designed to be a support to those school districts that have already developed programs.
  • STUDENT ACTIVITIES - Activities centered around the students such as Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad and STEMfest are offered each year.
  • STATE CONFERENCE - Members of the ESU 10 HAL consortium can be selected to have their registration paid for to the Nebraska Associated for the Gifted Conference in February.

Consortium

The High Ability Learner (HAL) Consortium consists of schools who have pooled their high ability learner funds to better serve the needs of their high-ability students. These schools may receive no charge or discounted charge for services offered including consultations, assistance, in-services, student activities and workshops focused on HAL.

Technology Integration Support


The Teaching and Learning Department at ESU 10 is committed to helping districts with technology integration. T&L staff members offer learning opportunities that focus on technologies which improve student engagement and learning, enhance curriculum, increase productivity, and promote digital citizenship. Educational technology workshops are available at ESU 10 or can be held at school districts upon request. T&L staff are available to visit school districts to assist in the area of technology planning as it relates to the School Improvement Process.
